katakey Start typing

A typing teacher that adapts to you

katakey teaches touch typing the way research says skills are learnt: a little at a time, with practice aimed at exactly what you find hard, spread over days rather than crammed into one sitting. There are no lessons to pick and no sessions to finish. Open it, type for as long or as short as you like, and it carries on where you stopped.

Keys unlock as you master them

You start with the home row. Every key moves through learning, consolidating and automatic: a key advances when you type it accurately, at a steady speed, over enough attempts, and only after a night's sleep for the last step, because that is when motor skills settle. New keys unlock one or two at a time, so you are never juggling more than you can learn.

Practice aimed at your weak spots

The text is generated for you, line by line: real words and pronounceable made-up words that contain the keys, letter pairs and sequences that slow you down, mixed with the ones you know so they stay fresh. Keys you have mastered come back now and then before you forget them.

Help that fades

While a key is new, an on-screen keyboard shows where it is and which finger presses it. As the key becomes automatic, the help disappears, so you learn to type without looking. A faint pacer caret keeps you just below the speed at which old habits take over.

Honest numbers

katakey shows accuracy and the keys you have mastered first, and speed second. If you are relearning after years of typing your own way, you will slow down before you get faster; that is normal, and the statistics are built so the dip does not hide your progress.
