Privacy, in plain words
katakey is a free, independently run project based in the United States. There are no accounts. Your typing history stays on your device. This page explains the separate, aggregate traffic statistics used by the website and the choices you have.
Your practice stays on your device
katakey saves your practice key presses, timing, mistakes, progress, settings and profile names in your browser. It uses a local database in the storage your browser gives this website. These records and names are not uploaded to katakey or Vercel Analytics.
You can export a backup and import it again in Settings → Profiles. Clearing this site's browser data, changing browsers or changing devices can remove access to your history. Export a backup first. Where persistent storage is unavailable, the app warns that practice will only be kept until the page closes.
“Practise anonymously” keeps practice in memory for that session instead of saving it to your usual profile. It does not upload practice records. A visit to the website may still count in the aggregate traffic statistics described below.
Aggregate website traffic
We use Vercel Web Analytics to understand how many people visit the website, which public pages they visit, where visits come from, and broad country, browser and device trends. We receive aggregate reports, not your practice history. There are no advertising cookies, session recordings or analytics events for individual key presses, lesson results or profile names.
Our integration sends page views only for the home, About and Privacy pages on katakey.com. It removes query strings and fragments from the page URL before sending it. Vercel also processes request information such as the referrer, approximate location, browser and device. It uses a daily visitor hash rather than an analytics cookie; Vercel says that visitor identification is discarded after 24 hours. The free dashboard shows one month of traffic history. See Vercel's analytics privacy documentation for its processing details.
We honor Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track signals by not loading traffic analytics. You can also turn it off below. This preference is saved in this browser only; clearing site storage resets it. Browsers that block preference storage are treated as opted out.
Learning analytics is not enabled
The practice-history uploader is disabled in the public website. No learning-data server is connected, and no practice histories are being collected for research. Traffic statistics cannot tell us how your typing improves or whether you return days later.
If optional learning analytics is introduced, we will explain its exact data, purpose, recipient, retention and deletion controls here before asking for a separate opt-in. Saying no will leave practice available. Existing practice histories will not be uploaded just because you visited the site or accepted traffic analytics.
Hosting and service providers
Vercel hosts this website. Like any web host, it receives your IP address and request information to deliver pages, secure the service and operate its infrastructure. Opting out of analytics does not prevent these necessary hosting requests. Provider processing may take place outside your country; see Vercel's privacy policy. We do not sell your practice history or use it for advertising.
Questions and requests
Contact the person running katakey at privacy@katakey.com about this page, privacy requests or a problem. Please send only the information needed to explain your request; do not send your typing-history archive unless we specifically arrange it with you. Email is forwarded by Porkbun to an inbox hosted by Proton. Messages are used to handle your request and kept while needed for that correspondence. You can ask for them to be deleted.
We cannot retrieve or delete practice records stored only in your browser. You control those records through Settings and your browser's site-data controls. Export a backup before deleting local data if you want to keep it.
Changes to this page
Updates appear here with a new date and version. A future change that introduces optional learning-data collection will require a fresh choice before that collection starts.
